Obesity Awareness

Pacific Islands #1 Killer

PSF is joining the fight against Obesity with the goal of being a proactive leader by forming national collaborations–like the Moana Alliance on Strategic Health Initiatives (MALOSI)–and supporting sustainable funding for culturally responsive research, intervention, and education. PSF believes that a healthy future for Pacific Islander communities begins with healthy lifestyles for children and in the home. PSF actively supports community-based health promotion through family-centered initiatives such as the annual Pacific Islander Family Health Expo, the "heART healthy" awareness exhibit, and the annual Utah Pacific Islander Health Week.

The PSF Foundation is compromised of medical experts, sports and fitness professionals, nutritional specialists, school educators and key community leaders and sponsors.

Just as it takes a village to raise a healthy child, it takes a unified collaborative effort to bring about healthy communities. PSF is taking the lead on an ever-growing list of innovative, integrated projects to tackle obesity, nutrition, and fitness issues with partners including:

• Brigham Young University (Hawaii and Provo, UT)

• Utah Pacific Islander Health Coalition

• Pacific Islander Community Health (San Diego, CA)

• Utah State University

• San Diego State University

• The Asia-Pacific Cultural Center (Seattle, WA)

• The Asian Pacific Islander American Health Forum (Washington, DC)

An ancient Samoan proverb that still holds true today reminds us that like a canoe with many paddlers, we can only lead our community in the right direction when everyone works together. Please join the PSF in making a real difference by paddling together toward a brighter, healthier future for generations to come.
